CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

“You’re not safe with me.”

Yvonne Tully couldn’t get those words out of her mind tonight.

She was sitting on the couch in her living room staring at the TV. A car chase was playing out on the screen, but she couldn’t hear the squealing of tires or the roaring of engines, because she had the volume turned all the way down.

So silly, she told herself.

She didn’t dare turn up the sound on her TV for fear of not hearing …

What?

What threat can there possibly be?

He must be far away by now.

But her reassuring thoughts had no effect. Yvonne felt chilly, her heart was beating fast, and goosebumps were rising all over her body.

She knew that the panic attacks she’d suffered all her life had gotten worse now that she was alone in this house where she’d lived for many years.

If only Larry was still here.

Her husband had always been a calming, steadying presence who knew how to help her get through these awful spells. But Larry had died of prostate cancer two years ago. And ever since then, this house had seemed cavernous and empty …

And unsafe.

But the truth was, her panic attacks didn’t seem silly right now. For the second night in a row, Yvonne was scared of something very tangible and specific. She’d heard the news yesterday and had been living in terror ever since.

Charles Cameron escaped from prison.

He’s on the loose somewhere.

For the umpteenth time, she wondered whether she should call the police and ask for some sort of protection. But again for the umpteenth time, she realized how crazy she’d sound, telling the police she was frightened on account of a threat made so many years ago by an eight-year-old child.

For just one awful night, back when she was a high school girl, she’d been little Charles Cameron’s babysitter. She still remembered the boy’s piercing gaze, and the way he’d murmured vague but terrifying threats.

“You’re not safe with me,” he’d said with a sinister grin.

“You’d better watch your back.”

When she’d told him she was going to report what he’d said to his parents, he’d let out a laugh that chilled her to the bone—a laugh that she’d never imagined could come through the lips of a child.

“Go ahead and do that,” he’d said. “I promise, you’ll be sorry.”

The force of the child’s personality had been so uncanny, so powerful, that she couldn’t help but believe him, as bizarre and implausible as his threat had seemed. And yet he was still a child, and a small one at that.

She vividly remembered what had happened next.

With a desperate burst of nerve, she’d grabbed the threatening little brat by the arm and pushed him into a closet. Then she’d locked the closet door with the skeleton key that was already there in the lock.

After that, she’d heard that weird laugh again.

“Now you’ve done it,” the boy had called through the locked door. “Now you’ll never be safe again for the rest of your life.”

She’d stood outside the closet and
